Realtime, screen-space local reflections, using C# and SharpDX
The following video shows my own implementation of the technique "Real Time Local Reflections (RLR)" used by Crytek in CryEngine3, and described here.
This particular implementation works with a non-deferred rendering system, and it’s adapted to work particularly well with planar surfaces like roads (which is what we most use it for, here at Simax).
The process is basically doing a texture lookup for the reflections as usual, but instead of using a cubemap, we use a simple texture (a copy of the previous back-buffer). It also needs a copy of the previous frame's depth buffer, to do a raymarch looking for the appropriate sample. The steps are the following:
- 1.- Start from the screen position of the pixel you are shading
- 2.- Move along the direction of the reflected (and projected to screen space) normal
- 3.- At each step, take a sample of the depth buffer, and look for a hit. If found, use the sample of the backbuffer at the same offset. If not, move one step forward until you are out of the texture bounds
Cons
It has a lot of downsides, as the amount of information present on a single texture is very limited. One key aspect is to fade out when you are reaching the limits of the backbuffer and when the reflection vector is facing the viewer (and therefore doesn´t hit the backbuffer). That way, you avoid hard edges in the reflection.
Another limitation is its compatibility with multisampling. The problem is that you need a copy of depth buffer, and if it's multisampled, you need to resolve it to a single sampled resource. Resolving the depth buffer from a multisample resource is not a trivial task, and in DX10 only graphics cards, it seems to be not possible (beside from doing it manually).
The method: ResolveSubResource does a good job with back-buffers, but it doesn´t work with depth-buffers (I haven´t tried in DX11 yet). Another option is to move to DX 10.1 and pass the depth buffer to the shader as a multi-sampled resource, using the Texture2DMS type introduced in DX 10.1. It allows to pass multi-sampled resources to shaders, so the resolving can be done in the shader.
Pros
The major advantage of this method is speed. By grabbing only the previous backbuffer, you can add reflections to almost any object in your scene. Of course, the shader used to draw is slower than a simple one, but nothing compared with the cost of rendering multiple cube-maps or other methods...
Also, despite its cons, it does a pretty convincing job in certain cases. Wet roads, water shaders and such stuff is a perfect case for it, as when you are driving in a simulator, the angle of incidence on the road, and therefore the reflection vector fit well with the back-buffer projection.

Simax Simulator to be used by the DGT as a diagnostic tool for brain damage
The DGT (Dirección General de Tráfico www.dgt.es), the Spanish organization in charge of traffic legislation and the Imserso (www.imserso.es), the Spanish Institute for the third age and social services, are using one of our Simax Simulators to test the ability to drive on people suffering from some kind of brain damage. The simulator allows them to safely drive through a real environment and to interact with other drivers, while the system automatically monitors and evaluates the way they drive, presenting a complete report with possible failures. Then, experts process that information, along with the results of other tests, to determine if the driver should be suggested to continue driving or not.

Simulador Simax como herramienta de diagnóstico para personas con daño cerebral (minuto 36)
La DGT (Dirección General de Tráfico), así como el Imserso (Instituto de Mayores y Servicios Sociales), están utilizando uno de nuestros simuladores Simax para evaluar la habilidad para conducir en personas que han sufrido algún tipo de daño cerebral. El simulador permite a dichas personas conducir de forma totalmente segura por un entorno real, e interactuar con otros conductores, mientras evalúa y monitoriza automáticamente el modo en que conducen, para presentar finalmente un completo informe con los posibles fallos cometidos durante el proceso. Yesterdary, we released a video about the latest Simax product: the Bentley Continental GT V8 simulator, which was used by the brand in the world press premiere last February. People like Tiff Needell (Fifth Gear), Frank Marcus (MotorTrend USA) or Guy Smith (2003 LeMans winner) had the chance to try it. Simax to develop the Bentley Continental GT V8 Simulator
During the last month, Bentley has been presenting the new Continental GT V8 at the Circuit of Navarra.
Simax was there, testing the car and working in the development of an accurate simulation, to be introduced in the Simax driving simulators permanently installed at the circuit, so journalists could test the car both virtually and in the real track.
After several days working with Bentley experts to tune up the simulated car, the result has been pretty impressive. Now, journalists from all around the globe, like Tiff Needell, from Fifth Gear (in the picture, driving one of our simulators) are coming to the event.
There were also some professional drivers there, like the LeMans 2003 Winner Guy Smith, who was driving in our simulator for almost one hour and a half. It was a pleasure to hear his impressions, and I must say, he really liked the sim.
Simax Driving Simulator exercise: emergency situations practice

Simax F1 Simulator

In this case, we are developing a replica of the Renault R30: a 2.4L V8 engine which reaches 19.000 rpm and almost 900 hp, for less than 600 Kg… Awesome!

Simax Forklift Simulator
We are about to release the next Simax simulator. It´s the new Forklift Simulator, a full-featured, next-gen training simulator to learn all the concepts needed to drive and work with a forklift, including basic management of the device´s features, load handling and distribution, driving in every possible situation, dangerous or emergency situations, usual load and unload works, etc. All of our virtual machines are exact replica of their real counterparts: with real motorized joints, mass distribution, and exact layout of controls like levers, joysticks, pedals, etc.

Simax ECO-Driving and Road Safety HD video
At Simax, we have been working hardly the last months on improving the ECO-Driving and Road Safety training features of our simulators. Some results of this work are shown in the following video:

Simax en el Microsoft Innovation Day
El pasado Martes, 1 de Junio, Microsoft celebró en Bilbao el primer Innovation Day, donde nos mostró las tendencias en innovación que la corporación está investigando, así como los nuevos productos que llegan al mercado en los próximos meses. Hablaron de Natal, el cual se espera en el mercado para finales de año, hablaron de Mavis, un sistema de indexación de contenidos de video impresionante, de Photosynth, un sistema bastante impresionante que genera fake cubemaps 3D a partir de fotos normales geo-posicionadas, por supuesto de Azure, Windows Phone, Zune HD, de las nuevas tendencias en educación, en sanidad, en el hogar del futuro. En fin una gozada.
Simax estuvo invitada a una de las ponencias como “caso de éxito”, según Microsoft, junto con la directora de Indisys, otra gran empresa con una tecnología que aplica la inteligencia artificial para aplicativos del lenguaje natural, realmente impresionante.
Directivos de Intel dejaron ver ordenadores portátiles especialmente diseñados para niños, que resisten incluso caídas desde 60 cm de altura (impresionante ver al ponente dándole patadas). Me gustó mucho un gráfico que mostraron de la tendencia en disipación de calor que seguían los procesadores de tecnología Pentium. De no haber cambiado de tecnología, ahora mismo un procesador disiparía por cm2 el mismo calor que la tobera de una lanzadera espacial. Gracias a la evolución tecnológica, la reducción del tamaño de los transistores, y a la paralelización, se ha conseguido reducir el consumo de forma dramática. Por cierto, Intel tiene un prototipo de procesador (por el momento para estaciones de computación), con ¡¡¡80 núcleos en un solo chip !!!
También me gustó mucho la ponencia de César Gaicoya, reputado arquitecto, y uno de los artífices del museo Guggenheim de Bilbao, junto a Frank Gehry. Mostró el proceso de diseño y fabricación que siguieron en el museo, haciendo hincapié en los puntos donde más se innovo (que no fueron pocos). Se me caía la baba, la verdad…
En fin, un gusto.
